Three months after pleading guilty to corruption charges for awarding a no-bid contract to a longtime friend and political supporter in exchange for a discounted furnace, Charles Moreau has become the latest former Rhode Island elected official to head to federal prison.

Moreau, the former Mayor of Central Falls, was sentenced today to two years behind bars as well as a $25K fine and a total of 300 hours of community service for the three years following his release.

Moreau, who stepped down from his position in September, had sought a reduced sentence of 21 months but U.S. District Court Judge John J. McConnell declined, citing the former mayor’s betrayal of the public’s trust.

Moreau is scheduled to report to prison on March 4.
